Illustrations: Above, Providence Place in 2001 seen beyond Waterplace Park on a WaterFire night. The Marriott Courtyard is at the far left and the Westin Hotel beyond it. This photo, so lovely it seems like a painting, is by Richard Benjamin. Below is the photo that runs with the column, shot from the balcony outside the office of Governor Carcieri. Providence Place takes up much of the center and right of the shot, with the Westin and its recent addition just beyond, and the GTECH building (now interposed between the Waterplace basin and the mall) at the far left. The bottom photo is of the two Waterplace Luxury Condominium towers to the right and the new Blue Cross & Blue Shield of R.I. headquarters at left.

provplace.JPGIn this week's column, your intrepid correspondent sits Providence on a stool in a dunce cap for misbehavior during this past decade.

This is a photographic tout for that column, which is chock full of glittering generalities, broad truths stated straightforwardly. Perhaps there are readers who will disagree with me over which of the photos represent beauty and which represent ugliness. Never mind. The facts are the facts, and here they are in full color.
