Gordon Lightfoot, now a legend at 70 (Wikipedia), was the soundtrack to many a mellow Sunday back when. He sang me to sleep sometimes.

Road trips started off with Willie Nelson tunes, but Lightfoot was always in the tape box too.

I found a blog devoted to Canoeing -Tales From The Paddle. Lightfoot cassettes were the soundtrack to Yuri's trips before a staph infection of his spinal cord landed him permanently in a wheelchair. This blog documents his memories.

Hornepayne Ontario (Missinaibi River 1980) Brian and I, having finished loading the Chevy, gave one last tug on the ropes securing the canoe to the roof, said our goodbyes and departed our university town of London Ontario. Pushing back into my seat, I pulled out my treasured collection of Gordon Lightfoot cassettes and searched for an appropriate album with which to christen our journey.

Lightfoot's music has always been my refuge, where I can hide between trips to the northern wonders of my beautiful province. Gord's gift of painting musical portraits depicting rugged wilderness, lost loves and lonesome travels, have always been the embodiment of the Northern experience. What better way to start our trip than to complement it with some treasured Lightfoot tune? How appropriate! His beautiful tune 'Hi'way Songs'!...

I could only find one review, from last year at the Columbus Dispatch: Singer's delivery adds to poignancy.

Joe and I bought a pair -- throwing a line to the future, to the summer.

Tonight, we're planning to go to Bovi's in East Providence to catch Ken Lyon & Tombstone. From the press release,

Ken Lyon & Tombstone are performing their first show of the season on Saturday, March 7 at the legendary Bovi's Tavern, 287 Taunton Avenue, East Providence, Rhode Island, 401-434-9670, www.bovistavern.com.

Kenny and the band have worked up a whole bunch of new material and we'll be performing 2 DIFFERENT SETS at 9:00 and 10:30.

And for you REAL night owls, Lyon Roar Productions will be presenting at Midnight the debut performance by RATTLESNAKE WHIP, the area's hottest new trio featuring our own Don "D.C." Culp on drums and Kenny's son Justin Lyon on bass and starring Noah Wotherspoon, a guitarist you've got to hear to believe!

Kenny and the Tombstone have a LONG history at Bovi's and this is a homecoming of sorts, getting back to the old stomping grounds and digging in for a full evening of Blues and R&B.
