National Grid offering $50 and free pickup for your old fridge, freezer
Christopher, if you click one of the links above, depending on where you live, you'll see the answer to your question:
Requirements for Program Participation:
1. The refrigerator to be recycled must be the second refrigerator in the home and not the primary refrigerator. Typically, these are found in basements or garages.
2. The unit must meet the size requirement which is 10 cu ft - 30 cu ft.
3. You must be a current residential electric customer of NationalGrid (Rhode Island) that is offering the recycling program.
4. National Grid customers must own the unit being recycled.
5. Limit to 2 units per customer.
6. Someone 18 years or older must be present to sign and release the unit.
7. You must provide clear and safe access to your appliances for the removal team.
They will not risk injury or be able to move personal effects or modify your home
(e.g.: remove door or railings) to remove the unit(s).
A rebate of $50 will be given to you for your effort in recycling responsibly.
If you have any questions about the recycling program, or if you would like to schedule your pickup date by phone; please feel free to contact our customer service center toll free at 877-545-4113.

Mask permits bird's-eye views with hummingbirds
Actually, I did Google it. (I certainly didn't count them myself.) But 8-10 seems to be giant hummingbirds, littler ones can get up to anywhere from 90-120.

Hummingbirds' wings beat a lot faster than 8-10 per second. Google it.

A gross meatloaf hand for Halloween dinner
I think kids would love to eat this -- maybe even fight over the thumb. What's not to like about meatloaf and mashed potatoes dressed up for Halloween?

GeoCities dies today; spawned blinking, blaring, broken-icon style of Web design
I too had my first website on Geocities. It served me very well. RIP Geocities.

The dancing baby cracks me up :D :D .. Geocities was the site where I created my first HTML page, when writing web pages was considered super cool thing. Yahoo should have sold the site instead of pulling the plug.

FDA may ban electronic cigarettes
A rare spark of sanity occurred this week when California Governor Arnold Schwarzenager saved electronic cigarettes from being banned for everyone in the state with a Vito! Glad he showed some sense...

Gone today, here tomorrow: Polaroid to relaunch instant cameras
The interesting thing is that this might find a niche in the mainstream now that eveyone has gone digital and found that they have LOST the entire family history to a hard drive crash or some such electronic disaster.

Providence ranked 22nd-smartest city at Tina Brown's 'Daily Beast'
The most common misspelling I've seen in news copy is commerical. It's a finger typo, I think, just comes out that way.
As for intelligence, how about ranking cities by the percentage of resdients who fell for Nigerian spam scams?
Good idea about changing the captcha process, jorn. I'll look into it tomorrow. Btw, you get used to that flaky font. I usually type it right on my first try these days.

Providence ranked 22nd-smartest city at Tina Brown's 'Daily Beast'
I'm toying with the idea that counting _misspellings_ will give a rough measure of IQ for different websites, and that the misspelling themselves can be ranked from dumber to smarter:
low iq
in tact/intact
to/too
lose/loose
-ys/-ies
'nt/n't
alot/a lot
you're/your
than/then
threw/through
who's/whose
its/it's
[apostrophes]
their/there
consensus/concensus
led/lead
high iq
ps-- your captcha system SUCKS-- if it's not necessary for previews, the preview button should be above the captcha, and there should be a button specifically labeled different-captcha

Notes from the flu
I hope you'll fully recover and regain your strength and normal voice - although Joe might prefer the sexy, raspy one.
I find the herbal immune support which is similar to wellness formula but much less expensive helps me when I have the beginning of cold symptoms and also any of the ricola cough drops. Rest and more rest, plus fluid and patience..and this too shall pass.
