  • 4:39 PM JoAnn Stone on '60s fashion model's memoir seems unfathomable to an '09 fashionista

I recently reconnected with Keith Allison, whom I had not seen or spoken with since our graduation from high school in Texas in 1961. In a phone conversation this afternoon (October 15, 2011), he mentioned Leon Bing. I was clueless but interested given his remembrances of her and the unorthodoxy of her life. She's a fascinating woman, about whom I want to learn more -- and will. But the point I wish to make here is both astonishingly obvious and at the same time exasperatingly elusive: the importance of an expansive frame of reference. I knew Keith as a good looking, good time rock 'n' roller whom I saw mostly in the hallways at school and in thespian class. Not an intellect. Not a guy aiming (or destined) for the top. For Leon Bing to have such a casual presence in his mind is somehow stunning to contemplate. He soaks up life so naturally, never turns off the camera inside him. Is unintentionally fearless. Yes, he can talk you under the table, but that's because there's so much observation preserved in him. What wonderment. It's humbling to this writer. Is this what being a musician does to you? Perhaps we should all become musicians. Thanks, Keith, for introducing me to Leon Bing.

Welcome back. How charitable of you to call it the cathedral and not a maze or worse. You have my sympathy and admiration.

  • 4:37 AM Alan Andersen on Updated: How come 'Zippy' comic strip features Providence's giant rooster

My dad was the manager there . I remember the day we picked it up from a farm. My dad made my mom hold it in the back of a truck. My dad would take the rooster out and in every day. It is part of my history.

  • 8:28 PM KL on Patriot Patrick Chung's mom scored on reggae charts / video

"Half Jamaican and Half Chinese" is a statement that people may interpret to think that Patrick's father is not Jamaican. Patrick's father is also JAMAICAN even though he is of Chinese descent. His mother is JAMAICAN of mainly African descent.

You have a cell phone, Pat? You're halfway there! (Since my clothes seldom have pockets, I'm waiting for telepathy. I do think supermarkets should come with them, so you can call home and ask if you need milk.) It's disappointing that tweaking the electronic medium is so much the message, connection for its own sake. Most people, when given a microphone, say "Who, me?" or "I am." If you have your say on a Washington Post story with 2800 other comments, was the pleasure of venting enough? Facebook fail: "I used to know you, be my friend," then never post anything. Google+ seems to let you have different friends, some you talk to, some you just let connect to you if they must. Spammers make money with connection, make it a means to a different end.

Call me ancient, dinosaur.. or whatever, I don't know how to text or tweet. I only use the cell phone when I have to -- don't even know how to take pix with it. How do you handle 200 message spams? Will someone invent the way to disable the spammers once and for all? Some day - perhaps??

  • 9:26 PM Mike on Patriots preseason announcers fail to call the game

I turned the sound off because I couldn't listen to their babble anymore. Complete disregard for the plays happening live while they rambled on. If this continues, I won't be watching Pats games this season. I'll be sure to let the TV station and their advertisers know.

  • 4:23 PM Christopher Nocera on A tree falls in the front yard of my childhood home

Sheila, I was going to check in on my mother and I saw the tree in front of your house. (You lived there, so it will always be referred to as "your house.") It brought such great memories of your parents. The Commissioner a gentle giant and your mother who was the sweetest woman I ever met. She not only tipped the paper boy well but always offered me a glass of lemonade on a hot day. Life was good on Cathedral Avenue. My mom is 84 and is still living down the street.

  • 3:39 PM Kevin Phillips on A tree falls in the front yard of my childhood home

Hi Sheila. Lovely story about the ants. I stayed at Cathedral Avenue back in 1983 last time and before that July 4th 1978! Good to see Frank being published still! I had a memorable evening with Dick at the office on Boylston, early 80s, we sat down to watch a Red Sox game which unfortunately was rained off... so they showed a classic game where he was the starting pitcher and saved the day..Wow was he pleased to be able to say....see I told you I was really good and famous! Previous to that he and I had hung out together in a few bars with and without Frank, oh and Dunkin Donuts in Bangor. Glad the Hurricane blew over for you guys.. I was raised in HK so am used to the terror of them, by way of the memorable typhoons we had in the 60s Best wishes Kevin

  • 10:54 AM Edward f. St. Onge on Carl Sagan's 'Cosmos' series to have a sequel

Dr. Tyson came across as totally cool on Real Time with Bill Maher last night. I've seen his other teaching videos and, much as I like Dr. Kaku also, I'd be hard pressed to choose. It would be great if they could collaborate, but I don't think egos like that could fit in the same studio.

They probably picked Tyseon as more photogenic.

  • 9:17 AM Jef Nickerson on Carl Sagan's 'Cosmos' series to have a sequel

Seth MacFarlane might actually be an inspired choice. I could easily see this turning out to be NOVA ScienceNow with the Cosmos name slapped onto it. But MacFarlane's understanding of pop-culture means that he could actually help to make it feel like an updated sequel to the original. I just wish they'd tapped Michio Kaku rather than Neil deGrasse Tyson. Tyson totally grates on my nerves.

Wonderful, thank you! I just found out about BVSC on DISHonline.com. I work for DISH Network and just so happened to be browsing the site when I came upon the documentary done by Wim Wenders. The music and performances are moving and I’ve been sharing this with all of my music-loving friends since the video is free for viewing under the search “Buena Vista Social Club.”
