Westfield-Mass.-Rhode Island College garnered goals from senior forward Bruno Costa (Pawtucket, RI), senior striker Mike Patriarca (Warren, RI), freshman forward Emmanuel Asiedu (Lincoln, RI) and sophomore midfielder Ignacio Cespedes (Fitchburg, MA) as the Anchormen posted a 4-1 win over Westfield State in a non-conference men's soccer game on Wednesday afternoon.
RIC (8-7), which had lost three of its last four games, snaps a two-game losing skid with the win. The Owls (8-6-1) suffer their fourth straight setback.
Freshman defender Patrick LaRoche (Gardner, MA) assisted on the Anchormen's first two goals. Costa scored in the seventh minute on a one-timer following a free kick from 40-yards out.
Asiedu scored what proved to be the eventual game-winner in the 18th minute, which staked the visitors to a 2-0 halftime lead.
The hosts cut their deficit in half, 2-1, in the 50th minute on Justin Laliberte's (Easthampton, MA) fourth marker of the season. Laliberte received a skipping pass from Dan Brady (Wilbraham, MA) across the six-yard box and stuffed the ball to the left of RIC senior goalkeeper Nick Clark (East Bridgewater, MA).
RIC responded with two unassisted goals by Patriarca in the 61st minute and Cespedes 12 minutes later to ice the game.
The Owls held the advantage in shots, 28-13, and corner kicks, 10-6. Clark made a season-high 13 saves to earn the win.
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will resume Little East Conference action at Plymouth State on Saturday, Oct. 22 (1 p.m.).

The Providence College field hockey team defeated Brown, 3-2, in overtime on October 18 at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. Freshman Steph Guglielmo (Castle Rock, Colo.) tallied the game winner for Providence, 10:32 into overtime off a long outlet pass from freshman Henni Tietze (Sankt Augustin, Germany).
Guglielmo collected the pass, dribbled the ball into the top of the circle and forced Brown's keeper to come make a play. The goalkeeper attempted to clear the ball out of play, but Gugliemlo broke down her steps, pulled the ball back and lifted it over the keeper for the victory.
In the first half, the Bears got on the scoreboard early to take a 1-0 lead just 1:27 into the match. Clayton Christus tallied the goal on a reverse stick shot from the middle of the circle, after receiving a crossing pass from Haley Alvarez.
Providence finished the half with two unanswered goals to take a 2-1 lead into the break. Sophomore Hillary Anderson (Barrington, R.I.) struck first at 11:41 as she one-timed a pass from sophomore Kasey Bulman (Farmingdale, N.J.) during a penalty corner. Sophomore Henni Tietze (Sankt Augustin, Germany) put the Friars ahead on a direct shot during a penalty corner at 22:44. Anderson and senior Deirdre Quinn (Walpole, Mass.) were credited with assists.
Brown's Bridget McNamara tied the game, 2-2, at 39:38 as she one-timed a pass from Laura Iacovetti during a corner play. It proved to be the only goal of the second half, and forced overtime.
Providence outshot Brown, 13-10, including a 9-8 edge in shots on goal. The Friars also held an 8-5 advantage in penalty corners. In the overtime session, shots were even at three apiece. Brown held the edge in corners during overtime, 1-0, but they came up empty on the set play.
The Friars return to action on Friday, October 21 against BIG EAST foe Louisville. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m. in Louisville, Ky.

WORCESTER, MA - Junior leading scorer Eliza Marshall (North Andover, MA) scored her fifth goal of the year, and third in three games, in the 54th minute to break a scoreless tie and lift the Brown women's soccer team (9-4-1) to a 1-0 victory over Holy Cross (2-11-2) on Tuesday evening in Worcester. The victory assures the Bears of a winning season for the second consecutive year.
The Bears outshot Holy Cross, 5-2, in the opening half, but Crusaders' Ashlyn Angell stopped all five shots to keep the game scoreless through 45 minutes.
At the other end of the field, Brown sophomore MC Barrett (Ithaca, NY), who started for the first time in her career, recorded one save in the first half.
Marshall's game-winner came after senior Marybeth Lesbirel (Holmdel, NJ) played a loose ball over a crowd of people. Marshall beat a Holy Cross player to the ball and chipped the ball into the net from about 20 yards out at 53:18.
Holy Cross had a chance to tie the score in the 67th minute when Liz Early took a hard shot on net. But Barrett dove to her left and stopped the shot, one of two second-half saves, to help preserve the lead.
Overall, Brown outshot Holy Cross, 12-4, and earned eight corner kicks to one for the Crusaders. Angell finished with 10 saves, as only one of the Bears' 12 shots missed the net. Barrett played her first career complete game and earned her first career shutout, Brown's sixth of the season, with three saves.
Having played their last non-league game of the season, the Bears return to action on Sunday, October 23, when they travel to Ithaca, NY to face Cornell in a 3:00 p.m. contest.

PROVIDENCE, RI - Senior Bridget McNamara (Bethesda, MD) scored her second goal of the season to tie the score at 2-2 early in the second half, but the Friars (4-11) would score 10:29 into the first overtime to earn a 3-2 win over the Brown field hockey team (3-10) on Tuesday evening at Lennon Family Field.
Brown wasted little time in taking a 1-0 lead, as freshman Clayton Christus (Bernardsville, NJ) scored her third of the year just 1:27 after the opening whistle. Freshman Haley Alvarez (Martinsville, NJ) started the play with a beautiful cross from the right side that went straight to Christus in front. Christus settled the ball and beat Shannon DiStefano with a reverse to the left side, giving Brown a 1-0 lead.
The Bears would outshoot Providence, 5-4, during the first half, but the Friars scored on their first two corners of the game to grab a 2-1 lead at the 22:44 mark. Hillary Anderson scored the first one on a one-timer from the left post, tying the game at 11:41. Almost exactly 11 minutes later, Henni Tietze scored on a direct shot on a corner, giving the hosts a 2-1 lead.
Brown fought back and tied the game at 39:38 on a corner of its own. After stopping the ball for Christus, senior Laura Iacovetti (Blue Bell, PA) got the ball back on the left side and sent it in for McNamara, who one-timed her shot to the right side, scoring her second of the year.
Neither team was able to score in the remaining 30 minutes, as the score remained tied at 2-2 and the teams headed to overtime for the second year in a row. Brown had a series of chances throughout the first part of the extra period, including a breakaway by sophomore Avery Burns (Millersville, MD) that Kathi Weidman saved in a 78th minute and a near miss by freshman Meghan O'Donnell (Winchester, MA) a minute later.
Brown had a corner at the 79:01 mark, but could not get a shot off and the Friars countered, resulting in the game-winner by Steph Guglielmo, who dribbled into the circle, before shooting over freshman Shannon McSweeney (Boxborough, MA).
For the game, Providence held a 13-10 advantage in shots and an 8-5 lead in penalty corners. McSweeney finished with six saves, while DiStefano and Weidman combined for six saves for the Friars.
Brown continues action on Saturday, October 22, when it travels to Ithaca, NY to face Cornell in a 12:00 noon contest.

In a lengthy conversation with the Journal on Monday afternoon, Red Sox starting pitcher Jon Lester acknowledged that starting pitchers did drink beer in the clubhouse during games but also strongly condemned what he called a "witch hunt" to assign blame for the Red Sox collapse in September.
"This is a good group of guys who want to compete and win, and that's getting lost in all this hoopla of finger-pointing and getting reports blown out of proportion," he said. "People are on a witch hunt to try to find out why the second-highest-paid team in baseball lost. It's not one particular reason. It was a group effort. We didn't play good baseball at the end of the season. I hope people can understand that we care and that we're going to do better next year. We're going to compete our asses off for the city of Boston. That's the biggest thing I want to get across to fans. We're going to do this. We're going to make it right."
There will be much more to come in Tuesday's Providence Journal. Among the key bullet points:
* As Lester told the Boston Globe earlier Monday, starting pitchers did drink beer in the clubhouse while games were being played -- but not to the extent that has been reported.
"When the original report came out, it was made to seem as if guys were just sitting in the clubhouse with a 12-pack of Bud Light in front of them and drinking it until the game was over," he said. "That's not the case. We'd do the occasional ninth-inning -- if we were tied or down by one -- rally beer. We'd be sitting up there and drink one beer and come back down. We're always watching the game. We're always paying attention to what's going on. We're not sitting up there getting hammered."
* Lester denied an earlier Globe report that starting pitchers were playing video games in the clubhouse.
"Video games never happened," he said. "I don't even know where that came from. I don't even know how to turn one of those fricking things on."
* Lester also downplayed the reports that Red Sox pitchers ordered takeout fried chicken during games.
"The report that comes out says we're eating fried chicken every day and we're drunk in the clubhouse between starts, and that's not the case," Lester said. "Out of a six-month season, we ate fried chicken maybe three times."
* Lester said that he saw the much-discussed team meeting in Toronto as a "positive meeting."
"We had a lot of the September blues going on, and that's because of the long August we had," he said. "We had a long August. We were on the road for like 16 out of 18 days, and that's a long stretch on a team in August, especially when you're playing the team we're playing and going to the places we're going. That's tough. Every year, you're going to have the September woes or the September blues because it's the last month of the year. It's the grind, that summer, grind, that really hits you, and I, myself, was part of that group. It was a lot of us.
"Tito had to remind us who we were: 'We're the Boston Red Sox, and we need to start playing better and need to stop worrying about outside things.' For me, it wasn't a negative meeting; it was a positive meeting. He got his point across."
* Lester acknowledged that "guys got away" from the authority of manager Terry Francona, who seemed to be "burnt out" by the end of the season.
"Tito has been great to me and great to my family, and I've thanked him many times for what he's done for me -- off the field more than on the field," he said. "But there comes a time, like in any business in the world that's run by somebody, that you need to step back and let a fresh face step in. Tito got burnt out. Eight years in Boston, it's a tough place to be a manager -- or be a player. Night in, night out, he's got to answer questions about his job and about every else's job. He was burnt out. He was ready to go.
"In the clubhouse, yeah, it could have been more. But that was the luxury of having a manager like Tito. He trusted as far as controlling the clubhouse. He knew things would take care of themselves and that he didn't have to have an iron fist. Guys respected him for that."
Francona acknowledged after he vacated the manager's office that he felt like he couldn't reach players he'd once been able to reach, but Lester said he didn't see that.
"The really good thing about Tito is that he keeps everything in-house so well," Lester said. "I've been in his office a couple of times when he's needed to kick me in the rear end to get me going or to tell me I need to quit bitching about things and move on and start pitching better. But nobody would ever know that because he does it in his office. It's just you and him or you and him and the pitching coach. I didn't have any issues with that stuff this year. ...
"I don't know who he's implying that to. For the most part, we had normal stuff this year as far as in-house issues that come up every year, and I felt like they were handled."
* Lester came strongly to the defense of Josh Beckett and John Lackey when asked a general question about the perception that the clubhouse needed a shakeup this offseason.
"Those two guys are two of our bigger leaders on the team," he said. "If you get rid of those two guys just for the sake of getting rid of them, that tears us apart, period. Josh is a very influential person in that clubhouse, and so is Lack. Guys look to them for advice. Guys look to them for leadership -- and people are making these guys out to seem like the devil.
"I know Lack hasn't performed up to what people think he should. He'd be the first to come out and say that. ... He's not going to talk about his personal life, but it's tough to perform when you're going through that stuff."

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's hockey team was named Hockey East Team of the Week, while junior defenseman Myles Harvey (Orlando, Fla.) earned the league's Player of the Week honors on Monday, October 17. It is the first time since November 10, 2010 that the PC squad earned the accolade. In addition, it marks the first time a PC player has been named Hockey East Player of the Week since October 26, 2009 when Matt Bergland earned the honor.
Providence opened the season with two home victories over the weekend. On Friday, October 14, the Friars used five different goal scorers, including four freshmen to defeat No. 7 Boston University, 5-3, at Schneider Arena. The Friars took a 3-0 first period lead on goals by freshmen Drew Brown (Grass Lake, Mich.), Matt Montesano (West Bridgewater, Mass.) and Stefan Demopoulos (La Mesa, Calif.). After the Terriers rallied to tie the game early in the third, Harvey responded with a power-play goal to give the Friars a 4-3 edge. It marked his first career goal. Freshman Ross Mauermann (Janesville, Wis.) capped off the scoring with a goal at 8:56 to seal the win. Senior goalie Alex Beaudry (Cumberland, Ont.) made 23 stops in the victory.
The following night, Harvey and sophomore Derek Army (North Kingstown, R.I.) each had a career-high two goals as Providence held off UMass, 6-4. It marked the first time the Friars have won their first two league games since the 2005-06 season. Junior Billy Simon (Burnsville, Minn.) scored his first career goal which held up as the game winner. Classmate Tim Schaller (Merrimack, N.H.) added a short-handed goal.
The Friars will play two home games this weekend against defending national champion Minnesota-Duluth, beginning on Friday, October 21 at Schneider Arena.

Men's and women's fencing, wrestling and women's skiing should not be eliminated from Brown's intercollegiate athletics program, President Ruth J. Simmons has recommended in her response to the April Report of the Athletics Review Committee.
Those teams, Simmons wrote in a nine-page response that she will present to the Brown University Corporation later this week, "should be given the chance to demonstrate that their supporters are able to endow their sport at the level deemed necessary by the University." As part of a plan aimed at putting "all team sports on a better financial footing," Brown athletic director Michael Goldberger "has proposed a five year period of time to allow teams to raise a total of $42 million in additional endowment funds," Simmons noted.

According to the Des Moines Register, former Providence College men's basketball coach keno Davis has signed a one-year contract to be a color commentator and studio analyst on the Big Ten Network.
Davis has been fairly quiet since Providence fired him at the end of his third season. He has moved to Chicago, and told the Register that he is still open to coaching in the future.
"I'm committed to this for this year," he told the newspaper. "We'll see what options I have at the end of the season. Quite a few coaches have gone into broadcasting. They have enjoyed it so much they stayed in it. Others have gotten back into coaching. I don't know what's in store for my future. But I am looking forward to this year."

In an interview with Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe on Monday, Red Sox starter Jon Lester said that, although he and his fellow pitchers occasionally drank beer in the clubhouse during games, that was not the reason Boston lost 20 of 27 September games to miss the playoffs.
Lester called it "a bad habit" and said that he understands "how it looks to people and it probably looks bad." He added that he personally should have been in the dugout more often during games than he was. At the same time, Lester clarified that "it was a ninth-inning rally beer" and that it was typically a single beer he and the other pitchers would drink during games. Fried chicken was ordered maybe once a month from Popeye's, the pitcher said, and nobody played video games during the game.
Perhaps the most interesting thing emerging from Lester were his thoughts on departed manager Terry Francona.
"There comes a time when your authority is no longer there," Lester said. "You kind of run your course. People knew how Tito was and we pushed the envelope with it."
Lester suggested the Red Sox could benefit from having a greater veteran presence in the clubhouse. He dismissed the idea that he follows Josh Beckett or that Boston's pitchers were out of shape. He instead attributed the team's weight gains to "some crazy hours with the travel."
In the end, Lester said the Red Sox -- and he personally -- simply hit a slump at the worst possible time.
"It bothers me because I'm supposed to be a stopper," Lester said. "I picked a terrible time to stink. That's on me."

FOXBORO - After fumbling and bumbling for the majority of the afternoon, the Patriots put the ball in Tom Brady's hands with the game on the line and he delivered in a 20-16 New England victory.
Trailing for the first time all day, 16-13, with 2:31 to play, Brady took the Patriots 80 yards in 10 plays. He completed nine of his 10 passes with the final one going to Aaron Hernandez for an eight-yard touchdown. Just 22 seconds were left on the clock.
The Patriots high-powered offense short-circuited all day thanks to four turnovers. Two were Brady interceptions.
Dallas wasn't all that sharp either but Dan Bailey's 26 yard field goal with just over five minutes left gave the Cowboys their first lead of the game, 16-13. The defense couldn't hold, however, with the game on the line as Brady engineered the two-minute drill to perfection.
Brady finished with 289 yards passing on 27-of-41 with two TD's and two interceptions.
